Easter Bridge by Nathan Blackwater

Easter Bridge by Nathan Blackwater

Walking barefoot on the ground

Seeing new blooms on the tree

Watching a street person wave

It’s Easter.

Taking God into myself

Bread and Wine consumed

Celebrating with faith people.

It’s Easter.

Handing out colored eggs

Under the bridge

Where children huddle

It’s Easter.

But

It’s not pretty baskets

Full of chocolate bunnies

Wearing new clothes

That’s not Easter.

A handicapped man blinks

Weary eyes when he emerges

From under the dark

Of the bridge.

A confused woman follows him,

Then some hung over dudes,

Then the skittish kids

Take hesitant steps in the light.

Easter is always

Coming from dark to light

Even if it is a damp bridge

Called a homeless camp.
