For My Children by Katy Yazee

I wrote this for my children to learn for Thanksgiving.

Thanks by Katy Yazee

I almost step on a frog

I jerk my leg back

“Respect the water people

They give what we lack.”

My grandmother spoke these words,

While held by her hands

I  forgot ask questions

Of frogs in the sand.

Now I tell my children

And pause to wonder why

Frogs, and snakes, and fish

And things from the sky

What do we lack?

What do they give us?

They are so different

Why make such  fuss?

Sky people, water people earth people,

And Human people, all

Our differences count

On this we rise and fall

Thank you for this gift

Where we all have a place

We are all one kin

Within this Holy space
